Print Scale 1/72 MiG-17 Fresco Decals #72008

By Matt Bittner

Print Scale continues their excellent decal releases with a sheet for 1/72 MiG-17s. I'm unsure as to what exists in 1/72 besides the Dragon kit (which I hear is pretty accurate) and I'm also unsure of what it would take to convert the Dragon kit to the other variants.

The following aircraft are covered (and I quote direct from the instructions):

  • "MiG-17. Has been exposed in Kiev, 70." Finished in five-color camouflage – Green, Desert Yellow, Brown and Black on top, with what appear to be natural aluminum undersides.

  • "MiG-17F. The participant intrusion into Czechoslovakia in 1968. The non-standard four-unit board number." (This has an aircraft number of "1611".) Overall aluminum.

  • "MiG-17PF of 146th Guard Air Regiment of USSR Air Defence, Vsilkov, 1957." Overall aluminum.

  • "Lim-6bis – the Polish version of the MiG-17F, adapted for land attacks. Planes had additional wings pylons and the parachute container in the basis kill." Finished in Desert Yellow, Brown (and another, third color unidentified) on top, with Aircraft Blue undersides.

  • "MiG-17PF, Indonesian AF." Overall aluminum with black "swatches" and the markings include a "shark mouth". However, the drawing of this on the instruction sheet shows a different nose profile than the others. Whether this is just an error on the instructions or something that's not discussed in the instructions is unknown. Best to track down photos.

  • "Forca Aerea de Mosambique have received 23 MiG-17 from GDR in 1980 year. By the plane 'board 21' deserted on July, 8th, 1981 to Southern Africa". Finished with Light Blue Grey uppers and aluminum underside.

  • "MiG-17F. One or two instant grasped by Israel on August 12th, 1988." (Unfortunately the English text is not printed in its entirety so all of that is my take on what could have been printed.) This one has Desert Sand and Dark Green uppers, with a Light Blue Grey underside.

  • "MiG-17F the seniour lieutenant Nguen Van Baja from structure of 923rd fighter squadron of the Air Forces of Democratic Republic of Vietnam. June, 1966." Finished with Medium Green uppers and a Light Blue Grey underside.

  • "MiG-17F, the Air Forces of the North Korea. The middle 70." Overall aluminum.

  • "MiG-17. Forca Aerea Popular de Angola – Defesa Anti-Aviones. Were actively used in northern and the central Angola 1975." Desert Sand and Dark Green uppers with a Light Blue Grey underside.

  • "MiG-17 Shri Lanka. Air Base Kautanake, April, 1971." Overall aluminum.

  • "MiG-17F, Royal aircraft of Khmers. The plane was used to 1970." Overall aluminum.

  • "MiG-17F, the participant of war of 1967." I'm not sure of the markings of this one and that's all the instruction sheet has on it. Overall aluminum.

Unfortunately the instruction sheet is lacking. It only provides one side view per plane and nothing else. Top views would have been nice for the different camouflaged examples and the other side (most are port side views but there are a couple of starboard) would have been nice as well. You'll definitely need to track down more information for the example you want to build. There are enough decals to build every single aircraft except for the Soviet ones. You'll need to track down more stars for those as there are only six stars on the sheet, and it appears the very first camouflaged example uses all six.

All colors are Humbrol call-outs and the decals themselves are extremely well printed and in register. If you don't mind doing a little research than I can definitely recommend these decals to you.

My thanks for Print Scale for the review decals. Note that you can buy these decals through Linden Hill Imports.
