Dragon 1/32 Bf110C-7

By Will Riepl

Introduction

Sure looks like 1/32 scale is back and with a bang. Both Trumpeter and Dragon have introduced 1/32 scale kits, and Revell just re-released their old kit of the Bf 110 that has to be about 40 years old by now.

The Kit

The new Dragon kit is very nice; there are about 800 parts of plastic and photoetch stuff. With fine scribe lines, nice detail of the control surfaces, and no divots for the rivets, it is a beautiful kit.

The cockpit is very detailed. There is a lot of parts to add that will make nice looking cockpit. However, it will take some time to paint all the instruments It would have been nice to have a decal or clear panel with a film for the instruments, instead of having to paint them all.

You get all the ammo drums for the cannon and the machine guns. The machine gun and cannon barrels have been drilled out for you. Very nicely detailed and one of the high points of the kit. There is a full gun bay in the nose section that can be fixed up nicely.

You have two canopy choices, open or closed. The rear gunner section will slide into the main part of the canopy in the open position. Also they have some framework for the inside of the canopy. That to is a nice touch and the first time Dragon has offered it. They also give you the clear armor panel for the windscreen, if you want to put that on.

They have an accurately done DB 601N engines. You can cut the cowling open to show off the engine if you want.

In the kit you have an ECT 500 bomb rack for the fuselage and two wing mounted bomb racks.

The wings are well engineered with a wing spar to help keep the correct dihedral and add support. The leading edge slats should be in the down position when on the ground; it would be easy to cut them.

They have a sand filter if you want to put it on or just the straight air intake.
As to the photo etch parts they have the seat belts and the radio antenna. It looks much more authentic than the plastic.

There are decals for two different squadrons, 1.(z)JG 77,Norway 1941 and 6./ZG 1, Russia 1942.

Conclusion

Yes, I think this kit is well worth the price. It certainly beats trying to work the old Revell kit. The only minus I can see is the lack of instrument panel details. I hope Eduard will be coming out with a photo etched cockpit interior set for the Bf 110 sometime soon!
