The Heinkel He 100 was a fascinating aircraft, even though it did not
enter into mainstream production. Losing out to the Bf 109 in the goal
for a ‘super pursuit’ aircraft, the Heinkel He 112 underwent
some significant changes in an attempt to create a new fighter that had
incredible performance. The result was the He 100, which only vaguely
resembles the He 112, but it immediately began to capture records. In
1938, with Ernst Udet at the controls, the He 100V2 bested the previous
100km speed record by nearly 80kph. This was just one of many records
the He 100 would go on to capture during its career.
This book provides what is probably the most complete history on this
unique Heinkel aircraft, from its inception through its development and
to its final disposition as a propaganda tool. Copiously illustrated both
with photos and drawings, the visuals presented offer as much as the well-written
text. For a modeler’s reference, you could do no better, as the
photos include quite a few close up and detail shots as well.
The Military Aircraft in Detail series presents a great format for their
aircraft covered, and this one is no exception. The quality of text and
photos makes it well worth the cover price. My thanks to Specialty
Press for the review copy. |
