About 55 minutes in length.

By Ward Shrake

Another in the DVD series that Steve “CultTVman” Iverson puts together, for fans of “Fantastic Modeling”. This one breaks down into four DVD segments (in order):

(1) five “Star Trek” spaceship models by Joel Tavera;

(2) “Darth Vader’s TIE Advanced” space fighter from “Star Wars,” by Ward Shrake;

(3) Marc King’s scratch-built “Chariot” from “Lost in Space”;

(4) and video highlights from the 2006 WonderFest event, by Lou Dalmaso.

While one of my models is featured on this disc, I wish to point out that’s not my favorite segment. I actually like Marc King’s segment better. Besides just being rather entertaining, in a laid-back sort of way, that’s the only portion of this particular DVD which shows a hands-on, in-progress build of a model. Marc makes the build-up look like it was fun to do, and even relatively easy: but the final model’s pretty spiffy-looking. I’m not a huge “Lost in Space” fan – I tend towards even more obscure stuff – but Marc’s segment made me interested in the Chariot subject -- enough to be telling my wallet to cast an eye towards the soon-to-be-released (March?) kit of this subject, made by Moebius Models. (Which you can put on pre-order, now, at Cult’s Hobby Shop.)

I don’t mean to knock my own segment, too much – but then again, why not. While my Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter model has won me awards at seven out of the eight contests it has been in, (primarily for its paint job) that segment may be of more interest to others than to myself, simply because the build-up’s “been on my shelf” for nearly ten years. I regret not having had the ability to shoot in-progress video on that model -- but I’m doing so now, on other Sci-Fi or Fantasy-oriented models. I also shot it all in tiny little themed bites: rather than talking continuously, without changing camera angles. Next time, I’ll have to pace myself … it sounds like a major coffee overdose.

Joel Tavera is one of the most popular builders in this series of DVD’s. Fans of the Star Trek series of movies and/or TV shows, who also love to build models of those subjects, will get a kick out of seeing the finished build-ups Joel worked on, for himself and/or clients. The small detail parts and color call-outs of various portions of the ships (three Enterprise’s; plus the Bozeman and Stargazer) will be of interest to those fans … and since Star Trek is one of the largest demographics within Sci-Fi modeling, that’s presumably a lot of folks.

I found the highlights from WonderFest 2006 to be nifty stuff: in part because while I’ve read about that annual show, on-line, and seen pictures, I’ve not yet managed to get there in person. So being able to get a bit of the flavor of that event adds value to an already-nice DVD.

All in all, a nicely-done DVD. I’d recommend it more strongly, if I didn’t think I’d get in trouble for having a model featured on it.
