Toy Biz 1/12 “Captain America” (and
Red Skull)

Background:
Here’s a cool little (1:12 scale) figure diorama, for those of
you into Marvel’s comic book heroes and/or villains -- or who just
like dynamic figure sculptures.
Short story: 51 parts, molded in everyday styrene plastic. It will
require glue and painting, and will end up being about six-and-a-half
inches tall, when completed.
Parts breakdown: two sprues of blue plastic (“Captain America”
figure); two sprues of light gray (“Red Skull”); one clear
sprue (three parts); and a base made up of one dark gray sprue (nine parts)
plus four loose parts. All told, it boils down to this: 14 parts for the
base or scenery; 16 parts to make the “Red Skull” figure;
21 parts for “Captain America”. Toy Biz did a good job of
bagging the sprues; I didn’t find anything damaged in the tightly-packed
box.
Though adult modelers may not find it wildly useful, using different
plastic colors may help younger modelers; both to keep parts separate
during assembly, and to keep any paint work they’ll have to do to
“detailing only”.
It looks to be a pretty easy kit to build. In fact, I threw most of
the subassemblies together in an evening. The fun with any kit like this,
however, is painting it – and I’ll save that for when I’m
burnt out on larger projects.
Readers who want more info about this model should definitely check
out Jim Bertges’ “It’s All Plastic To Me” column,
from back issue #31 of Modeler’s Resource magazine. (Pages 12 and
13 of the Dec/Jan 2000 issue.) The fun level of that now-defunct magazine
was always a treat. I actually ordered my copy of this kit ($13 plus shipping,
on eBay; still sealed in the box) after reading Jim’s fine review.
Thanks to my wallet for the review sample.
