Roden's 1/72 German 75mm Pak-40 Antitank Gun

Roden's 1/72 German 75mm Pak-40 Antitank Gun

By Kent Kirkpatrick

75mm Pak-40 Antitank gun

As stated on the box, the German 75mm antitank gun, Pak-40, was developed in 1940 and entered service in 1941 with great success. It was used by the German Army in all theaters of the World War II to which they took part. More than 23,000 were produced. Besides the German Army it was used by the Hungarian, Romanian and Bulgarian Armies as well. The Russian Red Army captured a number of them and used them against the Germans.

The Kit

The boxart shows a rendering of an 75mm Pak-40 posed for action. There is a color plate on the side of the box that will assist you in painting your model. Inside the box you will see the kit is well-packaged in one sealed bag. The bag contains two part sprues molded in a soft light gray. Visual inspection shows that there are flash but there was a sink mark on the breech block. The ejector pin marks are found on the sprue racks instead of the parts. Part detail is very crisp and to scale. The four page instruction booklet (Ukrainian/German/English) is very well illustrated. To assist in assembly there is a symbol legend for gluing, painting, drilling, etc. including a numbered parts location diagram. Overall, this is an adequately detailed model kit from Roden in this scale.
We begin the twelve-step assembly with the 3 piece solid spoke wheels. Steps 2 through 6 are subassemblies of the carriage mount. Step 7 has you build you ammo box complete with 4 75mm ammo. The double laminated gun shield is complete with inner wall detail in step 8. All subassemblies for the gun carriage are mated together in step 9. The main 75mm gun and mount are assembled in step 10. Don't forget to drill out the end of the muzzle break. The last steps have you mat the gun shield and mount to the carriage for final assembly.
Now you should be ready for paint and weathering. The painting reference helps when choosing what Model Master colors to use to paint your 75mm Pak-40. You have the choice of three Pak-40 color schemes from North Africa and two from the Eastern Front. The only thing this kit needs is a couple of inaction crew members to compliment this kit.

Conclusion

This is unique kit in 1/72 scale from Roden. The addition of a towed artillery piece of the workhorse German weapon is a welcomed one. I highly recommend this kit. I would like to thank Roden for the review kit.
