Speedline #SPD 59 1974 IROC Porsche decals

The first International Race of Champions (IROC) series was held in
1974. The series was composed of four races contested on road courses.
It is the automotive equivalent of an “All Star” game. The
competitors drive identically prepared cars to ensure that the contest
is one of driving ability rather than automotive technology. The first
three races in the series were held at Riverside Raceway in California
and the final race at Daytona Speedway in Florida.

The IROC series was truly world class in scope, bringing together drivers
from the SCCA and Can-Am series, Formula One, NASCAR, and USAC/Indy car
racing. The drivers who competed in 1974 were among the best in the world,
including Mark Donohue, Emerson Fittipaldi, George Follmer, A.J. Foyt,
Richard Petty, and Peter Revson. Mark Donohue won three of the four races,
and the series. The third race in the series was Donohue’s final
victory. He retired at the conclusion of the IROC series, only to return
later in the season. He was killed the following year in a Formula One
practice accident.
The Speedline decal sheet is devoted to the first race in the series,
held at Riverside on October 27th, 1973. Mark Donohue won with an average
speed of 101.309 MPH, and led from start to finish. Bobby Unser finished
Second and Peter Revson Third. The cars included on the sheet (according
to the instruction sheet) are as follows:
1) Emerson Fittipaldi - Car #1
2) Mark Donohue- Car #2
3) Peter Revson – Car #3
4) George Follmer – Car #4
5) David Pearson – Car #5
6) Denny Hulme – Car #6
7) Bobby Unser – Car #7
8) A.J. Foyt – Car #8
9) Bobby Allison – Car #9
10) Richard Petty – Car #10
11) Gordon Johncock – Car #11
12) Roger McCluskey - Car #12
The decal instruction sheet lacks pictures or diagrams to indicate decal
placement, nor are the individual decals numbered. The sheet does have
paint color matches for most of the cars and it includes a link to the
Paintscratch website (https://www.paintscratch.com/) where you can purchase
genuine automotive touchup paints for the colors which are unavailable
in hobby paints. The decal sheet is packed with MOST of the decals needed
to depict all of the cars listed. All of the NUMBERS for the cars are
on the sheet, but not all of the NAMES! Missing are those of Johncock,
McCluskey, and Revson. This is doubtless due to the fact that several
names on the sheet are printed three times in error. I expect and hope
to see this sheet reissued with corrected artwork.
The decal sheet also includes Porsche logos and body stripes, and sponsor
decals from Champion, IROC, and Union 76 gasoline. The decal sheet is
printed by Cartograph of Italy, and the quality of the printing is superb.
The lettering is crisp and the colors are very opaque. These decals should
respond well to most decal setting solutions.
Conclusion
This is a great decal sheet depicting some very important drivers and
cars from the inaugural IROC series. Highly recommended!
