Afterburner Decals 1/48 VFA-105 Gunslingers

By Frank Anselmo

Another new release from Afterburner Decals is sheet AD 48-012, THE GUNSLINGERS OF VFA-105. If you are into Super Hornets, then this sheet is for you. It is HUGE!!!. The main sheet measures 8 x 10 ¼, and is loaded with the markings to build 4 different aircraft. Also included are three smaller sheets, one of which includes stencils, while the other two are correction sheets. The decals themselves are designed to fit the Hasegawa kit; but with some trimming, they could be made to fit the Revell/Monogram kit as well.

All of the aircraft are in the tactical scheme of overall Light Ghost Gray, FS 36375, with Dark Ghost Gray, FS 36320, on the upper surfaces. In addition, the two CAG aircraft have black vertical rudders.

Here are the individual markings provided in this package.

F/A-18E 166560 which is the CAG aircraft in 2007 aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

F/A-18E 166560 which was the CAG aircraft in 2006 aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

F/A-18E 166561 which was the CO’s aircraft in 2006 aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

F/A-18E 166655 AC405 was a line aircraft in 2006 aboard the USS Harry S. Truman.

Incidentally, Sara Joyner who was the CO of VFA-105 in 2006 has since become the Commander of this unit in 2007.

There are three full pages of instructions, with printing on both sides. There is a full color 3-view drawing of each aircraft. There are modelers’ notes as well, including details on the new style ECS vents on the top of the aircraft, and the aftermarket source for these new vents. Also included is a stencil guide, along with a sheet of weapons and stores locations on the aircraft.

These decals are very thin with a minimum amount of carrier film. The registration is perfect.

This and all other Afterburner Decals can be ordered directly from their website www.afterburnerdecals.com.

My thanks to Scott Brown of Afterburner Decals for this review sample.
