Tamiya 1/48 Germany Infantry on Maneuvers

By Mike Whye

Introduction

I think this is the fourth in a series of 1/48 figures made by Tamiya that I have reviewed. And Tamiya does a super job once more. This kit, MM No. 30, has 15 figures, all molded in medium gray styrene plastic and the molding is good. Like Tamiya’s previous 1/48 figure kits, the medals, buttons, pockets, belts and so on are very easy to see…so are their expressions. None of the figures are in action poses so this allows you, the modeler, to use them in more relaxed scenes.

The Kit

The figures include a seven-man machinegun crew on the march, a military policeman directing traffic, three tank crewmen, a couple officers going over papers and a couple of infantrymen standing around. Eight oval bases are provided for some of the figures if you want them.

None of the figures are complete with all requiring some assembly of trunks, arms, legs or heads. Some wear hats, others are hatless and four have flat tops, allowing you to put either helmets or M43 field caps on them.

Five figures are on one tree with the rest on another. Each figure is positioned so all its body components are grouped near each other. A third sprue has the oval bases plus a couple field caps, a couple Mauser Kar 98K rifles and the broken-down components of a tripod-mounted machinegun. The fourth and fifth sprues are identical and contain helmets, bayonets, gas mask containers, rucksacks, MP40 machine pistols, MG42 machineguns with bipods, ammunition boxes, holsters for both Walther and Luger pistols, more Mauser rifles, ammo magazines, map cases, canteens, headphones, folded spades, helmets, binoculars and Panzerfausts---get the idea you might not need anything more?

Instructions show how to assemble each figure and give advice about painting the soldiers. For a color guide, you’ll need to refer to the box top and its side panels.

Conclusion

I picked up my kit for $12 at the Kansas City IPMS Nationals in early August and for 15 figures, hey, I think that’s $12 well spent. These figures will liven up any diorama.
