Mission Models Micro-Chisel and Replacement Tips

By Matt Bittner

When I first read about the Micro-Chisel, naturally I was apprehensive. However, when I thought about it further, I thought it would be a great tool. In fact, I was correct. Not only does it work well with seams, but the one aspect I thought it would work really well with was molded on detail. When you're working with some of the 1/72nd Part photoetch - especially the WW1 aircraft photoetch - you need to remove all molded-on detail in the fuselage halves before adding the photoetch. While I haven't tried it yet, I could see this chisel working well with removing that detail. Much better than trying with one of the knife blades, and gouging the plastic drastically.

Mission Models goes one further. They released replacement tips for the Chisel that provides more flexibility. The two tips that come in the set are a narrower flat tip and a round tip. I've also heard that they've just recently released a set of tips for scribing. I would definitely like to try those, as what I currently have just doesn't cut the mustard.

While I haven't tried the replacement tips yet, I have tried the chisel as it comes out of its package, and it works really well with seams. Some day soon I hope to use it on removing some molded-on Roden 1/72nd Fokker D.VII interior prior to adding the Part photoetch. Highly recommended.

Thanks to Testors for the review samples.
