Weapons Of The Tankers

This is a beautiful hard-bound book for only having 127 pages in it but they pack of information in those pages. Harry Yeide's book covers the history of the American tank and the crews that manned them throughout World War II. It begins with the history of the armored battalions. This chapter covers the organizational development of armored doctrine and combat history in all theaters of operation during World War II. The majority of chapters cover light, medium and amphibious tanks as well as special variants including assault guns and mortar carriers. All main battle tanks from the Stuart variants, M24 Chaffee, M3 Lee series, the famous M4 Sherman tank and the M26 Pershing are covered. It is strange that the M10 Wolverine and M18 Hellcat tank destroyers are missing from this book. At 55 mph, the M18 was the fastest tracked vehicle during World War II. Another chapter is dedicated to the tank crews. This was my favorite chapter as it covers the crew's living conditions with excerpts from these men during combat. The final chapter covers supporting elements of tank units that are rarely documented in most books. It mentions half-tracks, weasels, trucks, tank retrievers and the venerable Jeep. Each type of vehicle is concisely covered without boring you. The color and black/white pictures are of excellent quality with some that tell a very riveting story themselves.

Conclusion

It would be nice if there were color-plates representing different paint schemes for US vehicles for model builders but there are tradeoffs. I have read a lot of books about American armor but this book is packed with pictures I haven't seen before about American armor in World War II. This is a small book but it is packed with a lot of information in a concise manner and you can't beat the price for a hard-bound book. I would like to thank MBI Publishing for the review books.
