The Journal of the Early Aeroplane
No. 192, May 2006
By Jim Schubert
A great color photo of the Farman ”Sport”, exhibited at
the NASM’s Dulles annex, graces the cover of this issue. It looks
like a great subject for a flying model or a scratchbuilt static scale
model. Unfortunately the write up on the plane, in the Museums/Organizations
section of the journal does not include drawings.
This 144 page quarterly journal is very difficult to review in a writing
of reasonable length, as it is so very full of really good stuff of interest
to aviation enthusiasts. My favorite article in this issue tells the story
of Charles K. Hamilton, parachutist, kite pilot, balloon pilot and aeroplane
pilot, from 1905 to his death in bed from natural causes in 1914. What
an adventure! In addition there are 10 more discrete articles in this
issue:
Thousand Dollar Triplane,
Henri Fabre,
DH-4B & -4M,
Grahame-White, Swamp Cypress & the DH-6,
Curtiss OX-5, part 2,
Hugh Rockwell & Engine
Aviettes,
Aircraft,
Times Tarmac and
Archiv – Peter M. Grosz (silk coverings)
Plus five sets of drawings and the usual departments: Film, Identification
X, Museums/Organizations, Gallery, Models, Historiography, Letters, Publications
(to blow my own whistle – I have a book review in this section)
and Wants & Disposals.
This journal costs $42 per year in the USA and $47 per year elsewhere.
