De
Havilland DH. 60 Moth: The World’s Most Successful Light Aeroplane
By Stuart McKay
ISBN: 1-85780-212-8
Hardcover, 192 pages, 16 in color
Don’t know what to buy yourself for your birthday this year? Not
sure what to do with that tax refund? I do, buy this book!
Stuart McKay, author of “De Havilland Tiger Moth: LegendaryBiplane
Trainer,” has returned with another opus on the equally important
De Havilland DH 60 Moth. Born in 1925, the brainchild of Captain Geoffrey
De Havilland, the Moth set the world of British aviation on fire. The
perfect combination of versatility and utility, the DH 60 quickly became
the world’s most successful light airplane.
From cover to cover this book is exceptional. Packed with crystal clear
photographs, it covers the Moth’s evolution, from the prototypes
to the survivors. The Moth served as an outstandingly successful civil
aircraft and military trainer and this book is a fitting tribute.
As a modeling reference it is excellent, although not in the more traditional
sense. Missing are the three-view drawings, interior details and color
profiles which are normally the hallmark of a good modeling reference,
but upon closer inspection these details are found.
Captions and text describe colors of specific airframes and details
of the Moth’s construction, while 39 color photos of surviving examples
round things out. Scattered among the numerous photos are racing Moths,
record-setting Moths, military Moths, landplanes, floatplanes and an amphibian!
Every photo left me wanting to build a model, and I can think of no higher
compliment to a modeling reference.
Conclusion:
In my opinion this book is a ‘must have’ if you are even
slightly interested in the Moth or De Havilland aircraft. Those with the
venerable Frog DH 60 kit or the various Choroszy resin kits will find
this book an invaluable reference.
Very highly recommended!
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Mr. McKay continues his De
Havilland themed books with the Leopard Moth, Hornet Moth or Dragon/Rapide
family!
