PYN-up 1/48 Airacobra Cuties Part 1

Reviewed by Chris Banyai-Riepl

Those guys at PYN-up decals are at it again, this time with some great artwork for that wonderful Eduard 1/48 P-39 kit. There are two options on this sheet, both from the South Pacific. That means that the basic finish is the same between the two, being olive drab over neutral gray, with white leading edges to the wings and a white tail. From there the changes are more dramatic.

The first option is a P-39N-5-BE of the 41 FS, 35 FG, serialed 42-18802, flying out of Nadzab, New Guinea in October 1943. This plane has a yellow fin cap and a yellow spinner, and the serial on the tail has been carefully blocked out of the white area. A small whit e51 is on the nose. This is a nose art sheet, though, and that's what we want to hear about. The P-39 lent itself well to 'door art,' as the doors allowed the artist to sit on the wing while painting. This plane has a keystone background, with a reclining nude looking forward, with the name "Julia" above it. The instructions include two photos of the artwork, including one in color.

The second option is one that I am sure many of us have heard of, that being the P-39D-1-BE 41-28267 of the 36 FS, 8 FG out of Port Moresby in September 1943. This plane carries the name "Air A Cutie" on both sides, and features large reclining nude figures on each side. On the port side, the gal is on her back, with her fur-lined boots on and a cigarette in her hand. On the starboard side she is on her belly, with no boots or cigarette. A white stripe around the nose cuts across her hands, while the white Q on the nose overlaps a bit of the figure on the port side. A photo of the starboard side is included in the instructions.

This is a great sheet with some fantastic artwork. Building up the "Air A Cutie" will definitely make for an attractive model, with its dramatic artwork, but "Julie" has its own mystique to it. Whichever one you build, the decals are very nicely printed and while there is an extra step in applying the nose art, there should be no problems. My thanks to Meteor Productions for the review sample.
