Italeri 1/72 FW-190 D-9

Italeri 1/72 FW-190 D-9

By Daniel Iscold

Overview

Despite the intensive development work it was not until the apperance of FW-190 D-9 (Dora 9) that an overall improvement in the performance of this superb fighter was attained. Until the end of the war the FW-190 D-9 was the most feared German fighter by the Allies.

The Kit

This is an old kit. But still remains much better than old ones from AIRFIX and Hasegawa.

When I opened the box I found two sprues of very well moulded gray plastic. Only few pieces as the cockpit floor and pilot figure have a noticeable ejectors pin marks, but I think that this is not a great problem because all we know that the Dora 9 when build with his hood in closed position, almost nothing will be seen inside the cockpit. The cockpit area is very poor detailed but with some scratch build using good reference material you can make a very good detailing work. The landing gear are very detailed for this scale and for the age of the kit. The cowling and engine area have some details and I think that this is enough to this kit. The panel lines are raised but this is very well done. For those who like recessed panel lines you won’t find any difficulties to convert the raised panel lines to recessed panel lines using good templates, ruler and a good scribing tool.

The instruction sheets are very well printed and bring enough information to build this kit with no problems of misunderstanding. The painting guide brings the colors from Model Master but they don´t callout the RLM colors for some reason. At the back side of box the modeler will find two profiles of two versions provided in this kit, which will be very helpful for the paint job I think, especially for beginners.

The clear parts are in two pieces which is great for those who like to build the airplanes with hood in opened position. The thickness of plastic seams to be correct.

The decals are very well printed and bring two options to make the painting, one for version for FW-190D-9 from 10/JG 54- Germany 1945 and other for 2/JG 26- Germany 1944.

Conclusion

This kit is great for beginners and for those who want a cheap option for this airplane. And to improve the details there is some aftermarket but nothing better than use the creativity and alternative materials, I think that this is make our hobby really fun.

My thanks go to Testors and Internet Modeler for this review sample.
