Czech Master Resin 1/72 Fairey Gannet Wingfold

Reviewed by Chris Banyai-Riepl

Overview

A while back, Czech Master Resin came out with a truly magnificent resin kit of the Fairey Gannet. This kit had just about everything, from a detailed interior to a beautiful exterior and expansive decal sheet. What it was missing, though, was a characteristic of the Gannet that was as distinctive as its bulbous fuselage: its bi-fold wings. The wings in the kit were cast solid, making it very difficult for the modeler to modify the kit to have the wings folded. Now, with this set, the modeler does not have to worry about that, and can fold the wings easily.

The Detail Set

This is a direct replacement for the CMR Gannet wings, and as such this will be a very simple conversion. With some work these could fit the old Frog kit, but as the CMR resin kit is so much better, why bother? The set comes with the main wing split into three pieces on each side, with each section having the appropriate hinge area detail molded in place. A slew of secondary parts make up the various hinges and other details needed to bring this wing fold to life. Be sure to follow the instructions closely to make sure that all the right pieces end up in the right place. There is not much that can go wrong with this, though, and with the wings braced with rods (as in real life), there should be no strength issues.

Conclusion

This is a nice way to save some shelf space and create a Gannet with that typical yet odd appearance that its folded wings generate. This conversion will be of little worry for any modeler who is capable of tackling the full resin kit in the first place.
