The first volume of Kagero's Ju 88 series begins with a resounding
bang. For those who want a good reference on this famous bomber, look
no further. Kagero's usual high quality is present throughout, with lots
of photos, some great color profiles, a set of outstanding scale drawings
(with 1/48 scale included in a pull-out section), and the standard Techmod-printed
decal sheet, with 1/72 and 1/48 options included.
Delving deeper, the text is a comprehensive outline of the history
of the Ju 88. After an introductory anecdote, the text outlines the development
of this high speed dive bomber. Following this comes a detailed type
breakdown, from the Ju 88A to the Ju 88T, and including a piece on the
Mistel design. Each major type is broken down into sub-variants, such
as the A-2 and A-4, with all the various differences clearly delineated.
After this general type description, a much more detailed description
of the Ju 88A-4 is presented, providing a comprehensive view of the Ju
88. Rounding out the text is a general section on camouflage and markings
for the Ju 88 family.
The color profiles are to the usual high standard found in Kagero publications,
and they build nicely on the camouflage text, showing some of the standard
and non-standard schemes carried by the Ju 88. Like other Kagero titles,
some of these profile illustrations are the options on the decal sheet.
This decal sheet provides markings for three aircraft, all of which are
fascinating subjects. Rounding out the book are the scale drawings, done
to the usual high level found in Kagero books, and like other titles,
this one has a nice type evolution drawing series, showing changes in
gray. This is very useful for the modeler, as it shows exactly what changed
with each type.
This is an outstanding book that is bound to be the beginning of an
excellent series on the Ju 88. I look forward to the next part, as I
am sure it will be just as good as this first volume. My thanks to Squadron
Mail Order for the review copy.
