Loon Models 1/72 "Wheel Well" Set for the
Tamiya Fw 190D-9
While the Tamiya 1/72 Fw 190D-9 is a very nice kit, it has an error
common to many Fw 190D-9 kits, that being a blanked off main wheel well.
On the real aircraft, the rear of the engine is visible through the open
wheel well. This set corrects this oversight in a big way. While Loon
Models has made its name on No Cut Conversions, this set has you bring
out the knife for a bit of extra work.
The first thing one notices upon opening the sturdy box is a large
one-piece casting of the lower wing, with the wheel wells now nicely
opened up. Also missing are the flaps, which are now presented in a lowered
fashion. A bit of trimming of the wing root on the fuselage halves will
be required to get everything to fit snugly, as well as a bit trimmed
off of the cockpit tub. The rest of the set provides pieces for the visible
portion of the engine, a new upper cowling, and various plumbing used
to make the final assembly look quite realistic.
While this set will take a bit of extra work over one of Loon Model's
No Cut conversions, it is a VERY simple job that anyone can do. The end
result will be a very attractive and detailed Fw 190D-9. My thanks to
Roll Models for the review sample. |
