One of the American squadrons initially equipped with the Nieuport 28
was the 27th AS. They later replaced these with the SPAD XIII. Prior to
this they suffered the worst loss of any AEF squadron when all six aircraft
from a patrol were lost on August 1 1918.
The 27th had an eagle imposed on a red disc as their unit insignia.
Individual numbers were black with a white outline. Wing stripes were
a black/white checkerboard on a slight diagonal.
Hartney's N6301 was photographed the morning of 1 August 1918, about
25 minutes before six other Ni28s from the 27th were lost
Many of the 27th's aircraft are known to have worn the yin/yang design
on their wheel covers, and the profile of Luke's SPAD tentatively does
so as well.
NOTE: All of these profiles as well as the WWI aircraft seen in the
last few months are contained on the newly revised and updated Colours
and Markings of WWI CD-Rom. There should be a review of it in an upcoming
