Meikraft Models 1/72 scale Grumman FF-1

Staying
with the interwar theme from last
month, here's a kit that's everything the Monogram kits weren't. And
that's not a Good Thing!
Actually, that's a bit harsh. While not nearly as cleanly and petitely
molded as the Monogram F4B-4 this is one of Meikraft's better efforts
once one gets past the garish orange plastic. The wing rib
detail is fairly restrained if a bit wobbly in places, with none of the
'starving cow' appearance characteristic of many biplane kits. The wings
are one-piece units with trailing edges that thankfully aren't overly
thick.
The
lightly-raised rivet detail on the fuselage and stabilizers is very well
done while control surface scribing is recessed but needs to be emphasized
a bit more. On the plus side, this FF-1 kit provides more cockpit detail,
if a bit crude, than last month's subject. Most of the detail parts, while
usable, could stand to be replaced, especially the guns and tail wheel.
The engine, however, is surprisingly good and should look fine after a
bit of cleanup work.
Only
the interplane 'N' struts are included in the box and even though a 1/72
scale four-view drawing is provided the true lengths of the missing struts
aren't given - break out both your scratchbuilding skills and your
rusty trig skills!
Decals
feature markings for an FF-1 of VF-5B and (strangely) an SF-1 of VS-3B
even though the only optional part included is an extra prop - SF-1s had
a different cowl ring and exhaust collector ring. One vacformed canopy
with indistinct framing and wavy glass areas is provided.
Overall this isn't a bad kit considering the limitations of limited-run
kits of the times; an experienced builder should be able to add an unusual
naval aircraft to the collection with a modicum of effort. Recommended
to all Golden Wings buffs!
