Maquette 1/35 Schienenwagen Pz. Sp. Wg. 202 (r)
Russian BA-20 armored car modified for railroad use in German service.

Kit # MQ 3572

By Don Barry

The Kit

The kit consists of 99 parts on three sprues molded in three different shades of plastic. The instructions are of the exploded view type, incorporating a parts map and showing seven assembly steps.

The chassis parts are identical to those of the GAZ M1 staff car by Maquette. There is a good deal of flash on the wheels, but they are used as spares. Otherwise the molding looks good, with minimal flash, shrinkage, or ejector pin marks.

The body part sprue shows nice detail, cleanly molded, very slight shrinkage on a couple of parts. There is good surface finish and detail, although somewhat heavy-handed at times. Rivet detail, hinges, and panel line execution is quite nice.

The third sprue contains the railroad wheels and a nicely executed section of railroad track bed, ties, and rails. A slight amount of shrinkage dimpling mars the width indicator pieces. These may be easier to remake than to clean up.

Decal markings are provided to model a captured Russian armored car converted by the Germans to patrol the railroads of Russia.

Conclusion

My overall impression is that this is a nicely rendered model of a seldom seen vehicle. This appears to be a simple, straightforward kit with no nasty surprises. Armor modeling fans of the Russian front in WW II will definitely want to add this kit to their collection. This kit is whole- heartedly recommended.

My thanks to MMD-Squadron for graciously donating this kit for our review.
