WW1 Austro-Hungarian Sworl
Fabric Decal

Reviewed by Tracy Hancock

Fans of Austro-Hungarian aviation owe Mike Grant a debt of gratitude. Much like their Allies in the First World War, the Austro-Hungarians had a flair for decorating their aircraft and, whether it be the colorful Lozenge or the Autumn Leaf or Sworl, the thought of recreating these patterns usually sends modelers running.

One look at the Sworl pattern and you will see why none but the brave have attempted hand painting this before (but some have!); you will also see why one would even try! it just looks so cool!!

Used on OEF built Albatros DIII (253 series), Sworl fabric covered basically the entire airframe with the exception of the bottoms of the wings and tailplanes and the metal engine panel. Blue Max and Eduard both make kits that would be suitable for this sheet. I believe that some of these OEF machines were used by Poland after the War, so careful research could open up the possibilities this sheet provides.

The decals themselves are very well printed and in excellent register. The notes call for the model surfaces to be painted CDL and sealed with Future before applying the decals. They also caution on the use of decal solvents, saying Solvaset should be avoided and recommend sealing the decals with Future as a final sealant.

Enough material is provided to cover the wings and tail and possibly the complete fuselage, but I have a feeling this would be very close. Of course anyone who will be building this will not leave out the rib tapes, so maybe a second sheet would provide useful.

A fine build by Artur Golebiewski using these decals can be found in his gallery on the wwi-modeling.org page.

Like most releases by Mike Grant, his Sworl decals are also available in 1/72 for the Roden, Hit Kit, and Pegasus kits.

I would like to thank Mike Grant for the opportunity to review these decals
