Mike Grant Decals 1/48 B-17F (MG 48-040)
and B-17G (MG 72-039 & MG 48-039)

Reviewed by Tracy Hancock

Nothing says 'bomber' like the B-17. Big, bad and dangerous with .50 caliber machine guns pointing in all directions, and God bless that ball turret gunner!

Mike Grant has released two sheets for the B-17, one for the B-17F in 1/48 and one for the B-17G in both 1/48 and 1/72 scale.

The B-17F "Seattle Warbirds" sheet features marking for three aircraft, two of which served in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. All three airframes are Olive Drab over Neutral Gray and have the upper nose blister deleated. The PTO aircraft are "Panama Hattie" and "Lulu Belle", both from the 63BS/ 43rd BG and an ETO machine, "Blooming Grove" from the 325BS/ 92nd BG.

The B-17G sheet is sure to please a lot of folks as it represents one of the most succesful B-17s ever; "Thunderbird" and is available in both scales. The sheet represents "Thunderbird" after the summer of 1944 when the red tail triangle was added and the instruction sheet gives the colors as Olive Drab and Neutral Gray over unprimed metal. Combine this with 113 missions and you have a pretty heavily worn bird!

Also present on the decal sheet itself is a small set of markings for "Miss Virginia" but no mention of them appears on the instructions.

The decals themselves are very nicely printed but covered with a solid carrier film, so each of the markings must be cut out seperately. Both B-17 sets come with the US National insignia on a separate sheet from the markings for the planes themselves and I believe that each sheet provides markings for one aircraft, but a set of "stars n' bars" are all you need to use the others. Noted on the B-17F "Seattle Warbirds" sheet is a question of whether or not the nose art was applied to both sides of these machines, Mike Grant gives you two sets of each and leaves it up to the individual modeler to decide.

One of the best things about aftermarket decal sheets is that your completed model has a better chance of standing out from the same kit built using kit decals, given that the B-17 always stands out in a collection or at a contest, these decals will be the icing on the cake!

Many thanks to Mike Grant for the review sheets.
