Academy 1/720 R.M.S. Titanic

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

Overview

A large black ship, hit an iceberg, too few lifeboats, hundreds died, big movie made about it a few years back? If none of this rings a bell, well, I just don't know what to say.

The Kit

This is the second Titanic kit that Academy has released. Their earlier 1/600 kit is quite nice and builds up into a good looking replica. This kit appears to share that heritage, as the parts breakdown is quite similar. Molded in three colors: white, tan and black, this kit has good detailing throughout. The kit comes with a one-piece full hull, with a separate display base also in black. The rest of the ship is either molded in tan or white.

The upper decking consists of four main pieces, each with additional superstructure added. The main piece has all of the upper deck houses made up from separate walls, upon which rests pieces to make up more of the decking. The complicated shape of these will make for some interesting painting challenges. Other upper deck detailing includes the funnels, lifeboats and their davits, railings, and antenna masts. The final pieces include the anchors and railings.

Conclusion

The small size of this kit lends itself well to being the first ship model for the younger modeler. The high recognition factor will keep them interested, and the multi-colored plastic means no paint needed. For the more serious modeler, a detailed model can result from this kit with the use of aftermarket photoetch railings and such, making this a nice kit for a wide range of builders.
