By Ray Mehlberger

History

Last month, I did an in-box review of DML's new kit of the Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf. C German halftrack. This new figure kit goes hand in glove with that kit.

What's in the box?:

The kit comes in an end-opening type box. The box art is by DML's resident artist Ron Valstad, as are the assembly instructions on the back of the box - both in full color. These instructions show the four figures provided in the kit as front and rear views. Their parts are called out with arrows the have the part numbers attached. Colors are given as Gunze Sangyo and Modelmaster hobby paint numbers only. This has always been my pet peeve with DML figure kits, that they don’t just say what these colors are. We don't all have conversion charts telling us what these numbers mean as far as colors. Below the four assembly drawings are a couple of black and white drawings of the front and back of the German field blouse.

There is only one tree of parts in the kit and a small fret of PE.

The tree of parts is molded in medium gray colored plastic. It holds: the parts of the four figures, which are divided into separate heads, torsos, arms, and legs. There are three feldmutz (soft peaked caps), one side cap, a pair of binoculars, an MG 34 machine-gun with folded bipod and a snail type ammo drum, and one set of headphone ear pieces. (34 parts in all)

The small PE fret holds the band that goes between the headphone ear pieces. This PE fret is the same one that is included in DML's earlier kit no. 6014, which was 'Waffen SS Tank Crew'.

The figures are all dressed in the standard German field gray blouse and pants. All have jack boots.

You get two seated figures: a 251 driver and co-driver, a standing figure posed to be leaning on the side of the fighting compartment of a 251 and a final standing figure who is posed manning the MG 34 machine-gun.

Conclusion

These figures will really augment the Sd.Kfz. 251s that are on the market. Not just the DML offerings only.

They are well molded, nicely detailed, and free of flash. Highly recommended.

I bought my example at my local shop.
