Condor Decals 1/72 AV-8B Harriers

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

This new sheet from Condor Decals provides markings for an interesting quartet of Harriers, three from the US Marines and one from the Spanish Navy. With the new Hasegawa kit supplanting the old Italeri kit these days, this decal sheet will offer some great options for that kit.

The Marine examples have two from VMA-231 and one from VMA-331. The first VMA-231 option is camouflaged in a two-tone wraparound gray scheme consisting of FS 35237 and FS 36375. Serialed 163662, this plane features a sharkmouth on the nose and a tail code of CG. The second VMA-231 plane is camouflaged in similar colors, but in a mirrored pattern. Also coded CG on the tail, this plane has no sharkmouth.

The VMA-331 plane shares the same camouflage pattern as the second VMA-231 plane, but in this instance it is finished in FS 34079 and FS 36173, a much darker scheme. Coded VL on the tail, this plane has an unclear emblem on the nose that could be either a squadron emblem or a personal emblem.

The final option on this sheet skips across the Atlantic to Spain, with a clean looking AV-8B finished in light sea gray over white. This plane carries the basic Spanish Navy markings, consisting of roundels in all six positions, the word 'Armada' on the nose and tail, and stenciling in a medium gray instead of black.

The decals are well printed, although they feel a little thick. The decals look well researched and will make for an interesting quartet of Harriers. My thanks to Condor Decals for the review sample. Visit their website for ordering information and other interesting decals.
