Yellow
Wings Decals 1/48 New Releases
Continuing their line of pre-war U.S. Navy subjects, the latest from
Yellow Wings Decals covers a basic necessity and a complete airplane package.
The basic necessity is a sheet of nothing but stars, while the complete
airplane package offers all the decals you need for a pair of colorful
TBD Devastators.
Starting with the US National Insignia sheet (number 48-005, $9.95),
this is labeled as Part 1 and includes a total of 27 roundels in seven
different sizes. These include 40", 42", 46", 52",
54", 56", and 60". Interestingly, there are three each
of the 60" and 56", and five of the 40". All the other
sizes have a total of four roundels. The instructions provide a clear
outline of where the roundels are positioned, as well as the size directives
for the PBY-5 Catalina, SB2U-1/2 Vindicator, TBD-1 Devastator, SBD-1/2
Dauntless, F2A-1/2 Buffalo, F4F-3/3A Wildcat, and F3F-1/2 biplane.
The
complete package for the TBD Devastator (number 48-006, $10.95) draws
from previous releases and incorporates stars, wing and fuselage stripes,
unit markings, and detail markings. There are two different aircraft covered,
with enough roundels for one. There are enough of the rest of the decals
to do both, though, so if you have the above sheet with extra roundels,
you'll have no problem building both of these aircraft.
The first plane is a TBD-1 Devastator, BuNo 0316, of VT-5. Coded 5-T-10,
this plane was the lead aircraft of the fourth section. As it was in the
fourth section, the wing and fuselage bands are in black. Other markings
for this plane include the capital E efficiency marking on the fuselage,
and the squadron emblem underneath the windscreen. The second aircraft
is a TBD-1 Devastator, BuNo 0343, of VT-6. This plane is coded 6-T-13,
which places it as the lead aircraft of the fifth section, with willow
green bands. It too has efficiency E letters on the side, as well as the
squadron emblem on both sides of the fuselage. Other decals include prop
logos, prop tip stripes, LSO stripes for the vertical tail, and U.S. Navy
text for the rear fuselage.
The
instructions are outstanding, providing plenty of information in both
sheets. The Devastator sheet has application instructions, marking diagrams,
and a general overview of the organization behind those colorful markings.
The decals, printed by Microscale, are very well done with excellent registration
and should pose no problems whatsoever, even over the corrugated skin
of a Devastator wing. If you are interested in putting some color on your
Navy aircraft, these decals are just what you need.
My thanks to Yellow Wings Decals for the review sample.
