Red Tail Mustangs

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

The release of the Trumpeter 1/24 P-51D Mustang kit has prompted many aftermarket decals to come out with colorful decals for the model. This latest release from Decals by AMtech is just such a case. This time around we get a pair of red-tailed Mustangs from the famous Tuskegee Airmen. Flying the Mediterranean theater, the 332nd Fighter Group achieved high accolades for their activities in the air, holding the honor of not losing a single bomber while under their protection.

Since the 1/24 Mustang is rather large, it is understandable that there are only two options on this sheet. The first option is a P-51D-15-NA of the 100th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, flown by 1st Lt. Robert W. Williams. Based out of Ramitelli, Italy, this plane is named "Duchess Arlene" and carried two victories by March 31, 1945. The red tail is prominent, and as a distinguishing squadron mark, all the tail trim tabs are painted black. The nose is also red, with a triangle point extending off underneath the exhaust stacks. The plane has the number 10 on the fuselage sides, and artwork of what I can only guess is Duchess Arlene underneath the windscreen.

The second option is from the 301st Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Groupe, and was flown by 1st Lt. Charles White. Also based out of Ramitelli, Italy, this plane is named "Creamer's Dream" and had a single victory by April 1, 1945. Like the above aircraft, this plane also has artwork of a woman on it, but interestingly this plane features both sides of the woman, with the back of the woman on the left side of the fuselage and the front on the right side. The red tail is accented by white trim tabs, and the nose has a red band and spinner. This plane is numbered 42, and both aircraft also carry yellow wing ID stripes.

This decal sheet will offer some rather colorful and definitely historical options for your Trumpeter 1/24 P-51D kit. The quality is high and there should be no problems in applying these to your model. My thanks to AMtech for the review sample.
