1/48 Henschel Hs 123A

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

The release of the old ESCI 1/48 Hs 123 kit by AMtech, with some much needed upgrades, has many modelers looking to add one of these interesting biplanes to their model collection. For those who do not want to use the kit decals, this sheet is the perfect answer. A total of five options are provided on this sheet, four Luftwaffe and one Spanish. The Luftwaffe options span from 1937 to 1942, while the sole Spanish example dates from 1945.

Starting with the Luftwaffe examples, the first choices is camouflaged in the pre-war splinter scheme of RLM 61/62/63 over RLM 65 and features the pre-war red tailband and a fuselage code of 52+A13. This plane is from 3./JG 165 "Immelman" out of Fürstenfeldbruck in 1937. The second Luftwaffe option is in RLM 70/71 over RLM 65, and coded L2+EN. This plane dates from 1940 and is from 5./LG 2 in Belgium. Option number three in the Luftwaffe quartet is also camouflaged in RLM 70/71 over RLM 65, this time coded CB+AF. A plane of FFS Schule (A/B) 71, this plane also carries a number 21 on the forward fuselage. The final Luftwaffe option is from the Eastern Front in 1942, a plane from 4./SchG 2. This plane is finished in RLM 71 over RLM 65 and features a yellow cowl, yellow fuselage band, and yellow lower wingtips on the upper wing. A black chevron, black triangle, and blue 'O' make up the markings on this aircraft.

Moving to the Spanish option, this plane is listed as being from the 61st Squadron in the Spanish Air Force in 1945. It is finished in silver overall, with the standard white rudder with black cross and red/yellow/red roundels for national insignia. The plane is coded 1-50 on the sides, and features a blue lightning bolt running down the fuselage sides.

The decals are nicely printed with excellent register and good saturation. These should really go well with the AMtech 1/48 kit. My thanks to AMtech for the review sample.
