Cutting Edge 1/48 Sea Kings

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

New from Cutting Edge is this decal sheet designed for the Hasegawa 1/48 Sea King kit. A total of four options are presented, all of which are colorful and interesting in their own way. Each one is from a different country as well, making for a very interesting decal sheet.

The first Sea King is a British example, being a Sea King HAS.5 from No. 771 Squadron, Royal Navy, at RNAS Culdrose, 1993. This Sea King is finished in overall medium sea gray, with signal red nose and tail sections, as well as sponsons. The instructions nose that this Sea King has a six-blade tail rotor and the large MEL AIR 5991 radome on the spine behind the engine.

Next up is a Sea King Mk. 43 of No. 330 Squadron, Royal Norwegian Air Force, based at Bodo, Norway in 1974. This helicopter is finished in overall white, with orange on the nose and tailboom. The Norwegian roundels all feature the red wings as separate, leaving it up to the modeler to get them aligned properly. This Sea King also has a radome on the spine, this time the EKCO AN 391.

Crossing the Atlantic, we come next to a CHSS-2 Sea King of HS-50, Royal Canadian Navy, based at Shearwater, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1964. This Sea King is finished in light gray with a dark gray top and dayglo orange on the nose and around the rear boom. This Sea King has no flotation gear on the sponsons, and for even more color the fuselage numbers are also in dayglo orange.

The final option is an SH-3A of HS-5 off of the USS Lake Champlain in 1963. This helicopter is overall engine gray, with fluorescent red-orange on the nose and around the rear tail boom. Blue and white checks are on the rear fuselage and on the top of the nose.

All of these Sea Kings are early SH-3As, which means that the rear stabilizer will need to be trimmed down. The instructions outline this, as well as all the other differences for all these options. The decals are beautifully printed, with perfect registration. These will make for some excellent options for the Hasegawa kit. My thanks to Meteor Productions for the review sample.
