The war in the Pacific is generally thought of in terms of carriers
and large naval battles, but there were also many fierce ground battles
on the islands. This new series from Kagero sheds some light on these
island battles, detailing the operations of M3 and M4 tanks in both US
and Australian service.
This book details several island campaigns, starting with Milne Bay
and continuing through Buna, New Georgia, Peleliu, and finally ending
with Iwo Jima. While by no means a complete history of all the island
battles during the Pacific war, these do provide a great cross-section
of what tankers went through on the islands. Each one of these battles
is a fascinating read and generally takes a chronological approach. In
addition to the M3 and the M4 tanks, the book also provides some coverage
on the Japanese opposition.
Along with the great text, the book has plenty of photos showing tanks
in island operations. Along with the good photo coverage are several color
profiles showing several interesting M3 and M4 tanks, as well as a couple
of Japanese Ha-go Type 95 tanks. To go along with these profiles is a
nicely printed decal sheet, with decals in both 1/35 and 1/72.
This book is a great way to start out a new series, and I hope that
Kagero continues the line with other interesting subject matter. My thanks
to Squadron Mail Order
for the review copy.
