The Kit

This is the BIG one. The new kit of the FW 190-D9 in 1/24 scale and it is big! The kit is about 150 parts molded in light gray plastic.Recessed panel lines are a nice feature. You have two options for markings and for the canopy.

The first page of the instructions is for the engine. There are 39 parts included for the engine and it is very nice. However there are no open panels so it can't be seen when you are finished. They could make the engine panels open so you could see the engine. I think that you can glue part D 13 to the inside of the cowling (part C28) and then you do not have to put the engine in.

The cockpit is next. I hope that we will see some after market sets soon. The kit one is OK and with some work it will look good. The after market resin cockpit would be nice in this big kit.

The fuselage halves look good. There is a lot of detailing there. The top part of the gun cowling looks a little too bulbous. It would take some work to make some new ones so I hope that we will see some resin ones.

The wings look good. The only thing that did not look right when I first saw the test shots was the wheel gear doors. Now that I have the kit I can see just where they got the information for this kit. In the book Aero Detail No 2 on the D9, they have some pictures of the D-9 at Champlain's. The wheel door is the same as in the kit... However, in looking at other pictures and T.O. drawings for the FW190, this is incorrect. I found a drawing for a TA 152 and they are same as what is in the Hasegawa D 9.If you use the Hasegawa 1/32 D-9 for your reference you can see what you will have to do the kit. The wheels look more like the early FW 190s (A3). You can put some putty on the wheels and sand them down and it will look a lot better.

I will not use the photoetch parts for the rudder and elevators. This is one thing that I wish they would not put in the kits. They just don't work. You can just glue them together and in place and save yourself a lot of trouble.

The decals have two FW 190-D9s. One is Black 12 with green and white RV bands, and the other one is out of II/JG 2 with the Yellow and White RV bands. The camouflage for the aircraft is RLM 81/82 for the wings and fuselage and RLM 76 for the sides and the bottom of the aircraft. The sides are mottled with RLM 02.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would use the Hasegawa D9 kit for reference. It will help with many things that are wrong with the kit. If you can find the Aero book on the D 9 this will help a lot. Thy have some very good pictures of the FW 190D-9 Another good book is the Aircraft Monograph No 8 Fw 190D-Ta 152 as it has good drawings and picture for the Fw190s.
