Condor Decals 1/72 F-8 Crusader Decals

By Chris Banyai-Riepl

The Chance Vought F-8 Crusader is considered the last Navy gunfighter, and this decal sheet pays homage to the type. A total of three options are provided on this sheet, one F8U2, one F-8E, and one F-8H. All three are colorful options, making it a challenge to decide which one to use first.

Starting with the F8U2, this plane, BuNo 156957, is from VF-84 off of the USS Independence. This plane has yellow flames coming off of the air intake, with a black/yellow/black fuselage band with a yellow chevron superimposed. The ventral fins are yellow, with black accents, as is the rudder. The tail code of AG is black with a yellow drop shadow.

The F-8E, BuNo 146996, is from VF-24 off of the USS Hancock. This plane has two bands of red and white checks on the tail, with a red chevron behind the black NP tail codes. On the ventral fin are three and a half MiG-17 kill markings, and the number 449 is on the nose.

The F-8H, BuNo 148684, is from VF-111 off of the USS Shangri La. This Crusader has a sharkmouth on the air intake, with an eye above that. The rudder carries the standard VF-111 Sundowner marking, with the AJ tail code being red with a white shadow. The ventral fin is white with a red accent.

The decals appear to be well printed, with good registration. They feel a bit thick, but should pose no serious problem and will probably blend in nicely with a clear topcoat. My thanks to Condor Decal for the review sample.
